Welcome to Geocaching 101
Or, more properly, "Welcome to Geocaching!" This section is designed for the completely uninitiatedthose of you who have never cached before and have possibly never used a GPS at all before.
I've taken the time in this section to spell everything out in as much detail as possible. I can't promise that I've answered every single question, but I hope I've given you enough information to get started playing the game. That's the key really, to get you out the door and on your way to finding your first cache as quickly as possible.

Know a Newbie?
Maybe you're an experienced cacher but you've got some friends you'd love to introduce geocaching to. Use the button below to send a link to this page to your friends. You'll also find the button available on other pages within this section, so if one particular page will be exceptionally helpful to the newbie in your life you can just send them that one.

Tutorial: Your First Hunt
In order to keep this as basic as possible, we're going to begin with just two assumptions:
- You have never used a GPS before, and the one you have is a basic handheld model.
- You're going to be hunting a fairly easy traditional cache that is hidden in the woods.
Of course, assumptions are just thatassumptions. The cache you choose might be quite a bit easier or maybe even a little harder than the one in the tutorial. It shouldn't be too difficult to adapt the information below to the cache you are searching for.
Basic Equipment
This section is an overview of what you need to play the game, starting with a GPS and working up. Of course, I've had to base this section heavily on my own experience and what I've gleaned from other cachers. I've also included several links to products available through my Amazon.com Associates store. The prices are great and your purchases go towards supporting this site.
Writing Great Online Logs
Many cachers seem hesitant to go beyond the simple details of the hunt or the familiar "TNLNSL" that we see all too often. Your online logs are your chance to express yourself and tell a little bit about your caching experience. With a few simple tips you can be writing some Pulitzer Prize winning geocaching logs!
Writing Great Online Logs offers simple outline for you to build your cache logs around. Along with those tips, you'll find some links to valuable resources that can help you in areas beyond just geocaching.
